Local Magazine

There are presently no open calls for submissions.

Local is a quarterly magazine that features one small U.S. city per issue. Many of us on the editorial team come from humble places, and we strive to capture their essence in an authentic, evenhanded manner. We are looking for web pieces that do the same in a conversational and compelling tone. Tell us about the town closest to your heart.

Please make all written and visual submissions through Submittable by clicking on the links below. You will be contacted within two weeks if your piece is selected.

Upon publication, you will receive a copy of our current issue in the mail and will be considered for publication in our next print issue.

Rules of the Road
All submissions must include your name, reliable contact information, genre, and title.
All submissions must be original content. If they have been previously published, please let us know.
We accept material at any time of the year.
Keep stories to under 1500 words and photographic endeavors to approximately 10-15 images.
Films are under no time limitations.

Our general themes are
Local oddities (person, place, or thing): that guy with the iguana or that building with a neon sign that says “Enter Above”
Local traditions: the scenic overlook everyone smooches at or the arcade that still gets “play”
Local scandals: a mayor who runs a brothel or a civil disobedience movement against slow traffic lights
Local hubs & grub: where food and conversation go hand-in-hand
Local innovation: that art or bike co-op or a modern blacksmith guild
Local legends (person, place, thing, or myth): the playground where Michael Jordan shot hoops at or the ghost that haunts your courthouse

We encourage you to review our content and writing style at www.localmag.us and www.localmag.tumblr.com before submitting your work.
